Letters. Letters. Letters.
No consistency.
NONE.
Just random letters running around acting all willy-nilly.
No rules. No regulations.
IT’S TOTAL CHAOS.
Let me explain.
You know when you’re at a football game and the cheerleader yells, “Give me a ____!” or “Give me an ____!” and everybody yells the letter back?
Here’s what keeps me awake.
Most of us think “an” goes with vowels and “a” goes with consonants.
Makes sense, right?
Wrong.
Take a look.
Give me a: B, C, D, G, J, K, P, Q, T, U, V, W, Y, Z.
Give me an: A, E, F, H, I, L, M, N, O, R, S.
What?
Hold on a second.
Isn’t U a vowel?
Apparently not today.
“Give me a U!”
Perfect.
“Give me an U!”
No. Absolutely not. That sounds like somebody’s having a stroke in the marching band.
But wait…
“Give me an umbrella.”
Sounds perfectly normal.
“Give me a umbrella.”
Nope. That’s just wrong.
Then you’ve got the letter H.
“Give me an H!”
Sure! H!!!
But if somebody says, “Give me a H,” I immediately assume they never made it past third grade.
Yet…
It’s a helicopter.
Not an helicopter.
Excuse me?
Reader beware – I’m about to drop an F-Bom
Why is it an FBI agent but a federal agent?
Hmmmmmmm
So before bed they tell us to count sheep.
One sheep.
Two sheep.
Three sheep.
Nice and relaxing.
Then my brain says…
“Wait a minute…”
It’s an S…
…but a sheep.
Well…
I’m not sleeping now.
