28 Ounces. Zero Calories (If ……) and Infinite Confusion
I consider myself a smart man.
By “smart” I mean I know how to read a tape measure.
I know how to do basic arithmetic.
I can convert fractions into decimals.
And I can figure out basic logic.
But sometimes, despite thinking I’m a smart man, there are times when even the simplest math confuses me.
And there is something I don’t get.
See if you can help me out here.
Working on a roof the other day.
4 days to be exact.
4 days in this heat.
But we had to get it done.
It was something I’ll not try to do again anytime soon.
A lot of water was consumed.
Plus, a lot of Gatorade was also consumed.
Being that I am trying to lose a little weight (down 16 pounds in 4 weeks), I switched to Gatorade Zero.
The taste is good and I appreciate the benefits.
But I read the label.
The whole thing has 10 calories.
Ok – 10 calories is cool.
It’s a 28 fl oz container and it went down so smooth.
10 calories if I were to drink the whole thing – which I did.
But then I read more carefully.
In this 28 fl oz container, they have on the packaging legend that a serving is 12 fl oz, making it 2.5 servings per container.

Now, I am not going to argue that being a grown-ass man, 28 ounces of Gatorade Zero is the perfect amount on a hot day to have as 1 serving.
BUT – here’s where it gets me ….
….. now follow me here …..
The packaging legend says per serving of 12 oz, there are no calories.
Zero – none – absence of calories.
SO – if I drink the whole thing at once, I get 10 calories.
But if I break it into 3 servings, 12 oz, 12 oz and 4 oz, there would be no calories.
Where did they go?
Here is where the intelligence kicks in – and again, follow me here ….
If there are 10 calories in a 28 oz container, then there are .35 calories per oz, meaning if a serving is 12 oz, shouldn’t it have 4.2 calories in that 12 oz serving?
If so, why does it state “0” calories per serving, but a whopping 10 calories in the entirety of the 28 oz?
Or, am I not as smart as I think I am?
