My NFL Dislikes

I do like football.

High school football, college football and the NFL.

I like football.

Pee-wee or Pop Warner … I’ve not seen enough of it to have an opinion.  But football being football, I’m sure I’d like it.

I know enough about it to know what’s going on.

Kate and Charlotte watch football when there’s nothing else to watch and we force them to, but they don’t want to hear about the nickel-back or the dime package or whether the defense if playing  3-4 OR  4-3.  The don’t care about the RPO or the where fullback/halfback line up.  They’re mainly there for the snacks and during the SuperBowl maybe the commercials, but not me.  I like the play on the field.

While I like football, there are 3 things with the current NFL that I do not like.

This time I will list them in the order by which I am offended.

3) The whole new kick-off formation and rules.  WHAT?  Special Teams are a part of the game and the kick-off sets the precedent for the game – keep it the way it was.  And now, if you want to do an on-side kick – you have to declare it ahead of the kick.

2) NFL games being played overseas.  HATE IT!!!  Cities make a lot of money on Game Sunday.  An NFL team only has 10 or 11 home games, if you include the Pre-Season.  If the team makes the playoffs, maybe the home city gets a few more, but the majority of cities do not and only have those scheduled home games.  It goes beyond the stadium workers who lose money when a home game is taken away.  It’s the small bar owner who counts on the Football Sunday revenue.  It’s the gas station owners, it’s the maids cleaning the rooms at the hotels, it’s the servers and bartenders counting on tips from the football crowds, it’s the parking lots attendants.  When you take a game out of a US city and play it overseas, you’re affecting the pockets of people that count on the football home game crowds.

1) And this is my biggest complaint of the NFL – contract holdouts.  HATE IT – HATE IT – HATE IT !!!  These multi-millionaires signed a contract.  The contract was agreed to by both the player and the team.  Agents and lawyers were involved and when signed, everyone is happy.  But then, wait – the player doesn’t like his contract, usually in the final year and will hold out until he gets a new contract.  That’s BS.  I’ve said it once and I’ll say it again – “IF THE CONTRACT WAS GOOD ENOUGH TO SIGN THEN – THEN IT’S GOOD ENOUGH TO PLAY FOR NOW”.  And don’t get me started on Rookie Contract Hold-Outs.

I’m a Commanders fan.  I grew of kind of a Colts fan when they were in Baltimore, then became a Redskins fan.  I liked Theisman and the John Riggins, but when they got Art Monk and then Darrell Green – I switched to the ‘Skins.  So being a Commanders fan, I’ve got my own separate list of grievances.

These three though, they irritate me.

No, I’m not going to boycott the NFL – I still enjoy it.

But hire me as the NFL Commissioner.

I’ll take care of all this BS.
