I know the expression, “Less is More” and it’s an adage that I adhere to.
When I go to buy a shirt, I don’t want to look at 35 different options, maybe 8 to 10 gives me a better visual for the shirt I want.
Or, another example, I wear glasses. And when I need to get a new pair of glasses, I simply can’t decide on a pair when I’m looking at 300 different frames. And often the frames are so similar that I see no difference, yet I still look at the frames and can’t decide on which frames are “the one”.
I understand a glasses place will want to advertise they have 500 different frames to choose from. But in that case, I just want to find a frame that I like, and I find it easier to pick among 75 different frames than 500 different frames.
So yes, sometimes less is more.
Want another example? Okay, since you asked …..
TV in the Sumstine house. We simply have too many options.
With the regular TV and cable and then the streaming options, there are just too many options to actually find something.
I have time to sit down and watch some TV, maybe I feel like watching a movie while I work, or watching sports or something that I really don’t have to pay attention to while I type out a piece for my blog. By the time I finish scrolling the different channels and going through the streaming choices, I’ve spent so much time, that now I don’t have time to watch something, or I’ve lost interest.
So yes, in many instances, less truly is more.
But yet, sometimes more is more.
And sometimes, that “more” is better.
There are many things that when you add “more” you make it better.
Yes, there can be too much of a good thing.
But ……
A double cheeseburger. Yes, sometimes more is better.
And ice cream – a double scoop on a cone.
Hell, maybe you get two different flavors – tell me that isn’t better than just 1 single scoop.
Somethings are just automatically improved when there is more.
I bring you …… the 4 slice toaster. Sure, I grew up with a traditional 2-slice toaster.
But 4 slices at once? FOUR – 4 – SLICES AT THE SAME TIME – GENIUS.
Need more?
Ok ….
Double stuffed oreos.
And when you eat too many of them …. Double doors.
Many MANY things are improved with the simple adding more of the same.
So, we’ve gone over things that are lessened when adding more.
And, we’ve gone over things that are improved by adding more.
As a capitalist society, consumers want more.
If we can afford more, we want more.
But, there must be a value.
It must be worth it to buy more of it to make it better.
But what made me think of this blog piece was something that happened the other day.
I was stuck with something that needed to be doubled.
As a single, this item was lacking.
This item, doubled, exists, and it’s used commonly.
In fact, it’s odd when the doubled item isn’t offered.
It’s more accepted when it is doubles.
So, with that in mind, I must ask …..
Why do we still have single ply toilet paper?
