Words, not of wisdom …. Nope, just words ….
Recently I started squeezing blueberries into my coffee. It’s quite the taste. I pulverize several blueberries into my mug before I use my Keurig for coffee.
*Side Note 1 – you do remember my love for my Keurig, as written in my very first post on the blog, right?
I even leave the blueberry carcass(es) in the mug, then it gives me something to chew on. It’s quite tasty.
But the outer part of the blueberry isn’t called a carcass. It’s not the “peel” or even the “husk”.
Nope.
The outer part of the blueberry is called the “bloom”.
WHO KNEW ?!?!?!?!
Them I wondered what other things have names that I don’t know.
My mind does wander.
Well, there’s the “aglet”
What is an aglet? Well, here’s a hint, most of us use it every day.
Got you thinking, don’t I?
Well, an aglet is the wrapping at the end of a shoelace to keep the shoelace fibers from fraying.
And now you now …….
But wait, perhaps there is more.
You know that thin metal wire cage that’s around a bottle of champagne or other sparkling beverage? It has a name. Yup, it’s called an “Agraffe”.
Again – WHO KNEW ?!?!?!
Here’s another one – and one that I just used …… I just used an “Interrobang”.
But Jim, what is an interrobang?
It’s when you combine an exclamation point with a question mark.
WHO KNEW ?!?!?!
*Side Note 2 – Dang, I interrobanged again.
In fact, not only did I use am interrobang, but I also used a “tittle”.
Yup, I used a tittle, so I guess I tittled …..
But Jim, what is a “tittle”?
Well, since you asked, a tittle is the little dot used above an “I” or a “j”.
There are also parts of the body that have names.
There is a name for area between the eyebrows and and also a name for the area between the nostrils.
The “Columella Nasi” is the space between the nostrils and, the space between the eyebrows is called the “Glabella”.
At WaWa, I often get a cup of coffee and I use a sleeve to not burn my hand on the cup.
BUT – it’s not called a sleeve.
Nope, it’s not a sleeve, it’s called a “Zarf”.
So, next time at WaWa, if I can’t find it, I’m gonna ask out loud, “Excuse me, do you have a zarf?”.
*Side Note 3 – I wonder if any customer will say, “Yeah dude, they’re over there.”
So, here’s another one:
What’s a “muntin”?
Well, since you ask, a muntin is the thin strip that separates window panes.
And here I just called them window dividing strips.
One last one.
We have the addition sign, we have the minus sign and we have the ‘x’ sign to multiple things.
But there’s another one. The division sign. You know, it’s a small line with a dot under and a dot over.
It’s called an “Odelus”.
So now you know.
And again, if you’re on Jeopardy and you win big – I’d appreciate a shout out.
