I Figured It Out.

Yes – I figured it out.

I figured out what happened to one of the characters in one of my favorite songs.

I always wondered what happened to her.

But then again, I never really took HIM into account.  I never considered what would become of HIM.

In one of my favorite songs, “Me and Mrs. Jones”, Billy Paul wrote about this woman, Mrs. Jones, that had a long going affair.  We automatically assume she’s having this affair because she’s in a bad relationship and that Mr. Jones is not cool.

Did he beat her?  I don’t think so.  See, she meets her other man in a public café, so being out in public she doesn’t seem to be covered in bruises.  Yes, I know.. maybe the bruises were hidden by clothes, very possible.

Was he a hopeless drunk?  Maybe.  But maybe not.

Did Mr. Jones take drugs?  Again, Maybe.  But maybe not.

Did Mr. Jones run around on her?  If so, ok, that makes Mrs. Jones going outside of the marriage a little more understood and justified.

Did Mr. Jones travel a lot?  And by a lot, I mean, “A LOT”.  Because, you see, Mrs. Jones met this other guy every day – EVERY DAY – at the same café at 6:30.

Every day at 6:30.  That time leaves a lot to speculate.  Was she an early riser and enjoyed a cup of coffee at this particular café, I mean, I assume that’s the excuse she used to meet this guy every day.  Because 6:30pm would be awkward.  6:30pm, every day.  Were I Mr. Jones, I’d be asking questions.  But 6:30am seems more plausible.

So we’ll go with that, 6:30am at this café.

But then I hear that Mr. Jones has moved on.  Seems he’s been ok.

Did it take him long to recover?

Not sure about that.

I never questioned the reasoning for Mrs. Jones going outside the marriage.

Maybe, just maybe, Mr. Jones was cool, but Mrs. Jones was the bad guy. Or, bad woman.

Maybe Mrs. Jones was a stone cold bitch and just an evil and mean lady.

But Mr. Jones seemed to have moved on.

Good for him.

Seems he was spotted in The New Amsterdam having a conversation with a black-haired flamenco dancer.

Mr. Jones – you go on with your bad self.

Seems, Mr. Jones also has a good friend, because Mr. Jones and this other guy were telling each other fairy tales while they stared at these beautiful women.  Then they playfully argued about who these beautiful women were looking back at.

But Mr. Jones also knows he’s a little older. As you know, he possibly wasted quite a few years with this Mrs. Jones lady, and now Mr. Jones looks back at his life and he wishes he was someone just a little more funky.

But don’t feel bad for Mr. Jones.

Sure, Mrs. Jones cheated on him and we can only assume they broke up.

But there remain many unanswered questions.

See, we can only assume they broke up and we can only assume they broke up because of infidelity.  Thus we can assume that Mr. Jones and Mrs. Jones parted ways.

But don’t feel bad for Mr. Jones.

See, I never tried to think of or hear his side.

But now I don’t feel too bad.

See, Mr. Jones, still has dreams.

Why, he’s even convinced he’s gonna be a big star.

So now I listen to “Me and Mrs. Jones” in a whole new light.

Seems maybe Mr. Jones might not have been all that bad.

So now I have to question everything I’ve ever thought about Mrs. Jones.

Jeez…. what else might I have been wrong about?
