I like traveling.
Seriously – who doesn’t?
I like flying but I also like driving.
Kate turns 19 and it’s her 1st birthday away from us and it’s weird.
So off we go. Lisa and Charlotte left earlier than I because I had pickup trouble.
A few hours behind and now I’m driving to Savannah.
Just me, the radio…. And yes…… my thoughts….
Sorry.
I was on a major highway headed towards 95 and there must have been an accident or some other traffic issue, because my GPS sent me on a few back roads to get around things.
Happy to abide by what the GPS guides me to do.
It rarely steers one wrong.
Back roads and a few small neighborhoods.
I was looking at road signs.
I saw a few that I want to discuss. I’ll number them to separate them.
1-“Drive like your kids live here”.
Okay – will do.
See, myself, I love my kids. So I will drive maybe a little bit conservatively.
But, what if someone doesn’t?
What if someone out there thinks their kid is an asshole?
Does this give this (most likely) horrible parent the right to drive with reckless abandon?
If he’s stopped by the local sheriff and the sheriff asks him, “Excuse me sir, why were you driving so recklessly?”
He guy responds he was driving like the sign said.
So the sheriff asks, “Well sir, who is your kid?”
And the guy responds, “Billy Bob Delinquent?”
Would the sheriff say, “Oh… him….. carry on sir?”
2-“Speed limit “20” when children present
Um… kind of vague isn’t it?
Always near a school so I understand the safety measure.
But at what distance from the sign and/or road do the children have to be to be “present”?
I’m all for safety.
The speed limit on this road was 35 and there was this sign to tell me that when children were present, the speed limit was 20.
It was in the 3:00 range and seeing no children, I proceeded at the posted speed limit of 35.
Certainly, keeping an eye out for children, and if spotted, I would decrease my speed to 20.
But what if an over-zealous officer had pulled me over. “Sir, the reason I stopped you, did you not see the sign?”
“Why yes, officer, I did see the sign. But what I did not see was the presence of children”
“Sir, they are in the school right there”
“But I see no children. Is it possible that every child was sick today, and thus, no children were ‘present’. Or perhaps there was a school field trip to the dairy farm on that hill over there, perhaps every child was on said field trip, thus no children were ‘present’.”
A stretch, sure. But it could happen.
Why not have a sign that says, “Speed limit 20 during school hours, then a sign that states what these school hours are.
Safety first.
3. “ Slow Men Working”
Okay – that writes itself.
Are these men paid by the hour? Thus explaining their moving very slowly.
4-this is my favorite one
“If you lived here, you’d be home”
Really?
Now I’ve seen a few of these signs throughout my travels.
But the majority of signs like these I’ve seen have been in, well, dare I say, less than desirable neighborhoods.
Why doesn’t the sign say: “if you lived here, you’d be injecting or smoking methamphetamines too”
Or, “If you lived here, you’d be recently on parole”
But I’ve never seen a sign that said, “Long haired freaky people need not apply”.
But I’ll keep an eye out.
