Yup. Sometimes I’m alone with my thoughts. That’s not always a bad thing. I have a lot to think about. Or often I have nothing to think about and my mind just wanders. And sometimes…. Well, sometimes it’s the same thing….
So, just the other day, I was driving and not listening to any music or news. Just me and the open road, thinking my thoughts and letting my mind wander.
And out of no where I started singing a song. It might have been to myself or it might have been out loud, not sure. But I had this song in my mind that I hadn’t thought of in years. As I sang the lyrics
*sidenote 1 – have you ever noticed, when you’re in the car singing – YOU SOUND FANTASTIC !!!
I started thinking about the lyrics, and it made me really think about what in the world this person was on. I mean seriously. What was this guy smoking? Because only 2 things could possibly be true:
- This song was completely made up and none of it happened.
- This guy was on some type of a mind altering substance and he THINKS it happened, enough to write about.
But for the purpose of my post here, I will give this songwriter the benefit of the doubt and assume it’s factual and it did happen/
So, here are the lyrics:

Jeremiah was a bullfrog
Was a good friend of mine
I never understood a single word he said
But I helped him drink his wine
And he always had some mighty fine wine.

Okay. Seriously. What is going on here?
This guy and a bullfrog were on a first name basis? I thought, maybe “Bullfrog” was a nickname, or perhaps slang for a cool guy or something. But he clearly says, that he “WAS” a bullfrog. Not we “called him bullfrog” or that he was “like” a bullfrog. No. Jeremiah WAS a bullfrog. And why past tense. Did Jeremiah die? If Jeremiah was alive then he’d sing, “Jeremiah is a bullfrog and is a good friend of mine”. How did he die? OR, is he still alive and they are no longer friends? So confused.
I have no problem with the lyrics, “I never understood a single word he said”. HE’S A BULLFROG ! I would be concerned if he sang that they had deep meaningful discussions, but we don’t need to go into that. I’ve had friends and we could sit there and just hang out and not need to talk. But eventually, words need to be spoken. But to “never” understand a single word?
SO you have an actual bullfrog that you can’t understand a single word and his name is Jeremiah and he’s a good friend? How do you know he’s Jeremiah? Did he tell you this? If he did tell you his name was Jeremiah than obviously you did understand 1 single word. Or, did Jeremiah wear a name tag? Okay – a whole new set of questions about a bull frog wearing a name tag.
And now I read, you helped him drink his wine? Um….. frog wine, or regular person wine? Did you guys have glasses or did you both drink right from the bottle? Oh, and this bullfrog named Jeremiah always had some mighty fine wine? Did he make his own wine or did her purchase it from a store? Me, I’d prefer a store-bought wine because I’m not too sure about how a bullfrog would make wine and what he’d use as ingredients.
The last two lines actually do make sense. Because if I were really good friends with a bullfrog named Jeremiah who I couldn’t understand a single word he said, large amounts of alcohol had better be involved. And it better be some mighty fine wine – I’ll tell you that.
And I wonder, did Jeremiah the bullfrog enjoy this guy’s company? Or did he just tolerate him hanging out and he felt he’d share his wine with him so he didn’t either step on him or cook him (Have you seen the bayou boys in Princess and the Frog?). The Bullfrog’s point of view was never discussed, but let’s just assume for the sake of the song that yes, Jeremiah did think of the songwriter as a good friend.
But in all actuality, I think this song writer guy needs to get out more and make some new friends; friends that: A) might not be bullfrogs or any other type of non-human and B) he can actually understand words they say so they can carry on even a minimal amount of conversation.
I do enjoy Three Dog Night. And this is a very catchy song. But those lyrics always did bother me a bit.
Thanks for letting me clear that up for myself. But did I actually clear anything up?
And be honest….. you are now singing that song.
You’re welcome.
